4 Essential Values Among Entrepreneurs

An individual’s skill set enables them to get jobs and a career, but an individual’s value set enables them to get an extraordinary life. All entrepreneurs will agree that entrepreneurship is a way of life. It is not something you can summarize in a bunch of to-do lists for a year, or on a weekly calendar. It is a constant way of living a life driven by a strong value system.

Though everyone has their own set of core values they hold close to the heart and live their lives by, there are some values that are essential to successful entrepreneurship.

1. Self confidence:  In a world full of doubting people, self confidence is what will keep an entrepreneur alive.  Confidence comes with an utmost commitment to one’s vision and also the readiness to accept whatever comes in the way. Motivational trainer and successful entrepreneur John Barksdale said quoting Arthur Ashe, “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.” Confidence among entrepreneurs is essential for both their external reputation and for their internal strength and resilience.

2. Innovation and Creativity:  The essence of every business is their ability to offer something new and meaningful to the world. It is a constant process of innovation and creativity. Successful businesses do not run stagnant, and the stagnancy is always broken by the innovations of the organization.  These values should come as second nature to the entrepreneurs. It is the innovation of the organization that makes it run, everything else is supplementary. Entrepreneurs on a personal level should be able to take innovative actions and believe in them. John Barksdale reminds us of a quote by John Rockefeller, “If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success.”

3. Ethics and Integrity: A true entrepreneur never cheats. Their commitment to their vision does not come above their basic business ethics and personal integrity. They uphold the moral competency of themselves and the organization. They operate with honesty and sincerity, even in the most difficult times. Being ethical is not always easy but is always necessary for an entrepreneur. John Barksdale believes that these values are important for gaining trust on both internal and external levels.

4. Teamwork and Kindness: Entrepreneurs do not see themselves as heroes fighting alone. They understand the importance of working as a team. They operate as kind and considerate humans. A healthy collaboration between all the stakeholders of an organization is absolutely essential to the success of an organization. The entrepreneur creates such an environment by exhibiting these values at all times and with everyone.

When these values become second nature to entrepreneurs, success automatically flows into their lives.
